Based on the louvre effectiveness score, performance louvres are sorted into rain defence classes, with “A” being the most effective in preventing rain penetration, and “D” being the least effective.
Setting New Benchmarks for Building Defense
Mastering the intersection of high-volume airflow and total rain defense requires more than a standard catalogue. At INNIVATE, we engineer proprietary louvre systems designed to withstand the most aggressive climatic conditions in Asia.
By prioritising the rigours of building physics, we ensure our systems provide a formidably engineered envelope that protects critical infrastructure without compromising on architectural vision.

PERFORMANCE LOUVRES
Setting New Benchmarks for Building Defense

Mastering the intersection of high-volume airflow and total rain defense requires more than a standard catalogue. At INNIVATE, we engineer proprietary louvre systems designed to withstand the most aggressive climatic conditions in Asia.
By prioritising the rigours of building physics, we ensure our systems provide a formidably engineered envelope that protects critical infrastructure without compromising on architectural vision.
Evaluating Performance Louvres: Critical Criteria for Building Defense
The primary goal of performance louvres—also referred to as ventilation louvres—is to master the balance between protection and permeability: facilitating high-volume airflow while providing uncompromising defense against rain penetration and noise.
To ensure the integrity of the building envelope, architects and engineers should evaluate these systems based on three critical technical benchmarks:
![]()
1. Rain Defence Effectiveness
![]()
2. Airflow Effectiveness
The aerodynamic coefficient, derived from wind tunnel testing, is used to calculate the airflow effectiveness of a performance louvre. The higher the coefficient, the more air passes through freely.
It is the only accurate method that provides a true comparison of performance, and should be used in designing the actual airflow requirements of a building during detailed design. It should not be confused with free area percentage, which is a suitable method at the building planning stage only.

3. Noise Reduction Effectiveness
Acoustic louvres are measured for transmission loss at Octave Band Centre Frequencies. 6dB is added to transmission loss values to get the free-field noise reduction ratings.
Acoustic louvres can sometimes also be given a Weighted Sound Reduction Index or “Rw” rating, expressed in decibels. The higher the Rw figure, the better the sound insulation provided.
Recommended design considerations for performance louvres
a. Site location and exposure
b. Local weather conditions
c. Location and exposure of louvres on building
d. Airflow rate and direction through louvres
e. Maximum acceptable pressure drop
f. Degree and depth of water penetration acceptance
g. Any special solutions for sloping applications
h. Aesthetic appearance
The Sustainability Standard: Why Performance Louvres are Essential for Green Buildings
As international certification standards like LEED certification (USA) and BCA Green Mark 2021 (Singapore) become the definitive benchmarks for the built environment, performance louvres have emerged as a critical imperative for high-efficiency design.
At INNIVATE, we bridge the gap between regulatory requirements and technical execution. With a team of LEED-accredited experts and deep experience engineering for the diverse climates of Asia, the USA, and the UK, we provide the specialised building physics needed to optimise the envelope.
Our systems transform the building into a sustainable asset by mastering the balance of natural ventilation and thermal protection. We build for the future by using fully recyclable aluminium, aligning technical excellence with the goals of the circular economy.
