Evaluating Performance Louvres: Critical Criteria for Building Defense

[us_separator]

The primary goal of performance louvres—also referred to as ventilation louvres—is to master the balance between protection and permeability: facilitating high-volume airflow while providing uncompromising defense against rain penetration and noise.

To ensure the integrity of the building envelope, architects and engineers should evaluate these systems based on three critical technical benchmarks:

[us_separator size=”small”]

1. Rain Defence Effectiveness

[us_separator size=”small”]

Based on the louvre effectiveness score, performance louvres are sorted into rain defence classes, with “A” being the most effective in preventing rain penetration, and “D” being the least effective.

[us_separator size=”small”]

2. Airflow Effectiveness

[us_separator size=”small”]

The aerodynamic coefficient, derived from wind tunnel testing, is used to calculate the airflow effectiveness of a performance louvre. The higher the coefficient, the more air passes through freely.

It is the only accurate method that provides a true comparison of performance, and should be used in designing the actual airflow requirements of a building during detailed design. It should not be confused with free area percentage, which is a suitable method at the building planning stage only.

[us_separator size=”small”]

3. Noise Reduction Effectiveness

[us_separator size=”small”]

Acoustic louvres are measured for transmission loss at Octave Band Centre Frequencies. 6dB is added to transmission loss values to get the free-field noise reduction ratings.

Acoustic louvres can sometimes also be given a Weighted Sound Reduction Index or “Rw” rating, expressed in decibels. The higher the Rw figure, the better the sound insulation provided.

Recommended design considerations for performance louvres

[us_separator]

a. Site location and exposure
b. Local weather conditions
c. Location and exposure of louvres on building
d. Airflow rate and direction through louvres
e. Maximum acceptable pressure drop
f. Degree and depth of water penetration acceptance
g. Any special solutions for sloping applications
h. Aesthetic appearance

The Sustainability Standard: Why Performance Louvres are Essential for Green Buildings

[us_separator]

As international certification standards like LEED certification (USA) and BCA Green Mark 2021 (Singapore) become the definitive benchmarks for the built environment, performance louvres have emerged as a critical imperative for high-efficiency design.

At INNIVATE, we bridge the gap between regulatory requirements and technical execution. With a team of LEED-accredited experts and deep experience engineering for the diverse climates of Asia, the USA, and the UK, we provide the specialised building physics needed to optimise the envelope.

Our systems transform the building into a sustainable asset by mastering the balance of natural ventilation and thermal protection. We build for the future by using fully recyclable aluminium, aligning technical excellence with the goals of the circular economy.

Performance Louvres FAQs

Performance louvres are those products that have undergone third-party performance testing (such as BS EN 13030:2001) at a certified testing laboratory (such as BSRIA UK) to provide the performance characteristics of the system with respect to rain defence and airflow performance.
There are different types of performance louvres each with a different louvre pitch, mounting angle, shape, and orientation. Each louvre would undergo performance testing and have different performance characteristics.
Aluminium is proven to be the most versatile material to form performance louvres, given its ability to be extruded and the fact that aluminium can be recycled and is fully recyclable.
A correctly-designed performance louvre system can provide optimum ventilation and enable the mechanical plant to operate at high efficiency, thereby reducing energy costs.
Performance louvres are tested to either the current European standard (BS EN 13030:2001) or the American AMCA standard. The European standard test is performed by the BSRIA laboratories in the UK, while the AMCA standard is performed by the Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) in the US.
All INNIVATE louvres are tested to BS EN 13030:2001 and test reports are available for every performance louvre model.
Performance louvres are best delivered to the site in a fully-assembled (at the factory) or partly-assembled form. Two forms of louvres are available. These are either an exposed mullion type which is provided in factory-assembled modules or a hidden mullion type which have pre-assembled rear modules with a clip-on, cut-to-size front louvres. Both systems are simple to install and avoid the problems associated with on-site fabrication and assembly.
INNIVATE provides some of the world’s finest performance louvres unparalleled in performance and appearance. This is backed by comprehensive technical support and a 10-year warranty.
